Memory is a powerful force both in the story of Coco and in our Christian story as well. In the world of Coco, memory is the key to life after death. The dead fade away to nothingness without the memory of the living. And a family cannot truly heal without remembering their story rightly. In the Bible, time and time again, we are called to remember. The holy meal we celebrate today is a remembrance. Without memory, who are we? And so, we struggle with what happens when memory is taken from us. It’s amazing that on the cross, all the thief asks is, “Jesus, remember me…” Perhaps our salvation lies in that plea. In God remembering, we are re-membered – remade and given new life in Christ. |
