Why do people love or hate Barbie so intensely? Perhaps because Barbie acts as a mirror, reflecting the scripts our culture assigns to women and men about beauty, achievement, usefulness, and power. The film shows that changing who stands at the top does not heal a system built on keeping others beneath them. In Luke 16, the rich man’s gate protects his comfort while shutting Lazarus out, but that boundary eventually becomes a chasm that also destroys the rich man. Gloria’s monologue names the problem, but recognition alone is not salvation. The gospel calls us to receive our identity as God’s beloved children, open the gates that protect privilege, repair the harm caused by exclusion, and build a community in which no one’s worth depends upon keeping someone else outside.
